Working group on maintenance of tenement scheme property final report to be launched on 4th june 2019
In early 2018 we told you about a new cross party working group, formed following debate in the Scottish Parliament on the maintenance of Scotland’s housing stock, specifically the urgent maintenance needs of many of the country’s traditional Tenements. Whilst Tenement buildings have been the subject of varied growing concerns, the group’s focus also considers modern buildings, including how the maintenance of newly constructed buildings can be best planned for and achieved in the future.
As well as a number of MSPs, the working group consists of professionals from various property and legal backgrounds and has met several times since March 2018, discussing what would work best in ensuring homeowners are compelled, and able, to maintain their buildings. Part of the group’s research included members of the group touring various Tenement buildings undergoing repairs, expanding their understanding about the challenges regularly faced by groups of homeowners. The group’s interim recommendations, published in January 2019, focussed on 5-yearly Building Inspections by qualified professionals, the creation of mandatory Building Maintenance Funds and the establishment of compulsory Owners’ Associations and we have been awaiting, with great interest, the publication of the group’s final recommendations report, due to be launched in Edinburgh on the 4 June 2019.
Many of our customers already have regular inspections of their properties carried out and operate Maintenance Funds, which help towards funding larger items of maintenance and repair which arise in the natural life of their buildings.
