Alzheimer Scotland – September Charity News Article

We continue our Charitable Giving this month with a £500 donation to Alzheimer Scotland, Scotland’s national dementia charity. Alzheimer Scotland was nominated by a member of our Glasgow team for whom the charity holds particular significance as close family members have been affected by this disease.

Dementia is a disease which affects the brain, making it harder to remember things or think as clearly as before. Over 90,000 people suffer from dementia in Scotland and although it is more common in older people, it can also affect those in their 50s, 40s or even younger. The aim of the charity is to make sure no one faces this frightening condition alone, by providing information, support and dementia-friendly activities.

Alzheimer Scotland runs a 24 hour freephone helpline which provides information and emotional support to people with dementia as well as their families and friends. Additionally there are 21 Dementia Resource Centres across the country which provide a safe and friendly environment for people with dementia and their carers to visit and participate in a range of activities.

The charity employs 550 staff across Scotland, including a network of Dementia Advisors who work in the community, supporting people with a dementia diagnosis.

Donations to Alzheimer Scotland can also help the charity to commit to funding scientific, clinical, social and policy research to prevent, care for and cure the disease.

Alzheimer Scotland campaigns hard to ensure as many people as possible are aware of dementia and learn how they can help those with the disease live well. Specifically, through their “Vision for Change” they campaign for:

  • Timely diagnosis with structured support
  • Support to live well with the condition
  • Good quality healthcare from professionals who understand the disease
  • Support to manage the care needs of advanced and end of life dementia with equality of access to healthcare

Gail Dolan, Lead for Stakeholder Engagement at Alzheimer Scotland, says:

“Thank you so much for reaching out and supporting Alzheimer Scotland. We are extremely grateful for your kind donation which will allow us to continue to support people living with dementia in Scotland, their families and carers.”
