Glasgow City Heritage Trust are hosting a couple of interesting events in the coming months covering the traditional Glasgow Tenement.
The first event being held will consider the development of ‘The Tenement in Glasgow’ from their original design and construction, through to periods of decay and neglect, and then subsequent restoration and preservation.
John Joseph Burns, an architect in Glasgow, will discuss his research into the tenement as an architectural typology in Glasgow, showing examples of the early tenements that rose around the High St through to the inter-war tenements of the 1930s.
Professor Douglas Robertson of the University of Stirling will then discuss the factors that contributed to the neglect of tenements, the emergence of movements and organisations focussed on saving them, and the policy that followed.
The second event is a debate on the future of the Tenement. This is the latest in a series of quarterly debates called ‘The City Talks’ – panellists will discuss a wide range of issues relating to the future of the tenement in Scotland. Topics will include ongoing maintenance and repair, adaptability of the tenement type and the design of contemporary tenements.
Panellists will include:
- Annie Flint, co-author of the Tenement Handbook and the Under One Roof Website;
- Andy Wightman MSP, Green Party representative for Lothian and campaigner for reform to the legal and financial frameworks that govern common properties;
- Ann Nisbet, an architect with Ann Nisbet Studio and member of the Camphill Gate Residents Association who are working to save their Category B-listed tenement in Shawlands.
